~~~ Josef Andreas Holzer ~~~
Josef Andreas Holzer, is the son of Sepp and Veronika Holzer. Josef learned a lot growing up on their farm, the "Krameterhof" situated in Ramingstein, Lungau (Salzburg) on the slopes of Mount Schwarzenberg the Krameterhof extends as far as 45 hectares at varying altitudes ranging from 1100 to 1500 metres above sea level. It gave Josef an understanding of nature that he did not receive in his later studies including ecology, forestry and bio diversity, "It's seeing and trying to understand what's going on behind what you see." Wise words that exemplify the intense observation used in Holzer Permaculture:
"You imagine yourself in the same situation, if you were this animal or plant, what would make you feel better, that's how we do agriculture."
We had the pleasure of meeting Josef while his father Sepp and he were presenting "The Secrets of Eden" Workshops in Washington state and Oregon. It is a further pleasure to introduce him to you.
An articulate and knowledgeable young man, he speaks of the concept and details with delight and understanding. He explains. in German, though his English is excellent, that this partnership with nature results in minimal financial and labor expenditure, and far more abundant in yield than other methods.
We captured a moment of his joyful nature and laughter and had to include it even though a bit
out of focus!
Their Websites contain videos of different areas of Krameterhof and a lot of information. You can also purchase books, CDs, & DVDs if you are interested in learning how to apply Holzer Permaculture wherever you are!   www.krameterhof.at (German)   www.krameterhof.at/en (English)
"Permaculture: Nature's Way"
Josef explains why his father, Sepp Holzer, is called the Rebel Farmer. "He's always walked his own path" and that has brought a lot of trouble Sepp's way but it didn't stop him from creating his farm into a paradise of Holzer permaculture high in the Austrian Alps where supposedly... "nothing can grow." He points out that diversity is a very important part of permaculture, a natural eco system can only be sustainable with diversity. Mono agriculture is not a natural system, it takes much more physical work, weeding, irrigating, fertilizing, spraying pesticides, all to produce food practically empty of nutrients. People have separated from nature, the human is nature too and part of the diversity working together with it. "What stuns me is to see trees in one row and the ground is bare. In nature there is no bare soil, so nature tries to close that wound." Wow a wound... we never thought about it that way. It's amazing hearing him explain in detail what goes terribly wrong with bare soil in mono agriculture, what happens to the nutrients, why it has to be irrigated, etc., and how this makes the plants actually dependent on you for survival. In permaculture there's no need for fertilizers or pesticides, simply put, just let nature take it's course and observe to make sure things are happy together and supporting each other. It's really a stunning difference! He gives examples of this and the difference between mono agriculture (based on greed) and the diversity of a mixed forest which yields the most abundance and provides for everyone, birds, animals, and humans, to get their ample share. Josef says it's not a belief, it is agriculture, it is a garden, it is just simple things in nature.
