"Nature's Heroes" Many BTO Guests felt a pull since childhood towards a passion for something. We introduce you to another. Jay's passion has been wildlife, he felt the responsibility of human disregard and harm, including to domestic pets that so easily become disposable. His love for animals and desire to "just help them" some day some way. Well that he has done, during the last 22 years and 200 oil spills rescuing 1000s of birds, he is a world leader in wildlife rehabilitation. Animals are pretty much analogical -in the moment, and he recognized something in them that people had lost. Laurie also had always wanted to work with animals, at an RSE event she happened to meet Jay and a tough and wonderful adventure began. Today we talk about the biggest to date, the Gulf Oil disaster. The process from capturing oil covered birds to finally releasing them is done with extreme care, each step is designed to reduce stress while continuing the recovery, it takes three people to hold a pelican. The last step the birds have to do naturally, restoring their water proofing, and something you probably don't know about feathers. The biggest difficulty with the Gulf was the human factor, emotions everywhere, media hysteria, senators, movie stars, and politicians yelling at them... Imagine the dynamics of this reality when these two RSE students arrived in total chaos! They realized, "We're in the Tank!" (we explain). It was a long focus through those months and a challenge to be flexible every day, or as Ramtha says being "oily" -not stuck in attitudes. It is an amazing human feat to reverse as much as possible from such harm on nature, last count was 1,235 birds were returned to the wild. |
