~~~ Edmundo Norte Ed.M. ~~~
"I look forward to seeing how we can each bring the things we
have come to learn to build a sustainable Arc to see us into the future."
Edmundo Norte Ed.M., serves as the Dean of Intercultural and International Studies at De Anza College in Cupertino, California, and is a national consultant on issues of diversity, equity, and transformative leadership. He conducts experiential workshops on "A Human Development Approach to Transforming Power, Perceptions, and Society", an empathy-focused way of approaching anti-racist, social justice work. He leads seminars and has taught courses at San Jose State University's Department of Educational Leadership and for California State University East Bay's Master of Education in Urban Teacher Leadership program.
In 2003 Edmundo began using Nonviolent Communication in his work on equity and multiculturalism, and completed the Bay Area Center for Nonviolent Communication's North American Leadership Program in 2005. His work now integrates a balance of critical consciousness with compassionate interpersonal connection. "This serves as the foundation for personal healing and social action that can transform the domination paradigm of our society as it manifests within our selves, in our relationships, and in the institutions within which we operate."
He holds a master's degree from Harvard University and has nearly completed his doctoral work there in the department of Human Development and Psychology. While his formal education is rooted in developmental psychology, professionally he has taught at every level of public education, from kindergarten to post-graduate programs. He acknowledges that his true life's work is the joyful and heart-wrenching challenge of applying his knowledge, experience, and efforts to the developmentally responsible parenting of his two children-an ongoing labor of love.
"I think this is an essential piece to the puzzle of how we will survive the coming calamity: and I do mean "how". Being prepared with all the physical necessities is absolutely important, and, how we will live and work with each other under extremely challenging conditions and not implode, will also be critical. The most wondrous thing about the practice of nonviolent communication for me has been the experience of going through an emotionally hurtful conflict with someone, and, with the conceptually simple but very difficult application of these principles and practices, coming away from the conflict actually feeling more connection and mutual understanding than before the conflict happened. Keeping our heart connections with each other strong during turbulent times will be crucial. I know I'd rather die feeling deeply met in love and care and mutual appreciation, than to survive physically but feel alienated and disconnected from those I love. NVC has been a precious tool for me to actually apply "emotional intelligence" and create the quality of relationships I most value." Please consider becoming a Member - click here
"When backgrounds Come Together"
Non-Violent Communications (NVC) and diversity, race, class, ethnicity, a spiritual and mindful process. Having worked with diversity in people for many years Edmundo has found it very interesting, it's dynamic and situations can be contentious. Disproportionate social justice brings anger, NVC brings tools for being grounded and gaining clarity. Edmundo shares many examples of the interpersonal dynamics when backgrounds come together. Powerful things come from this as our human behavior begins to be understood across the boundaries of differences. "One of the most challenging things in our world is we are born with a default of good and bad." He explains how the tools and strategies of awareness can resolve problems with communication and connections. Last he mentions that people don't take time to grieve from little daily things to the big things, it's not really part of our society or community. The interesting "Grieving Circle" exercise and what is unusual about it.
"A Compass to Calibrate Your Tools"
A compass for application of Non-Violent Communication, it is a complex process in the guise of a communication strategy yet much more than quality connections and human relationships. It's about making time for our physical, emotional, mental well being, and our spiritual self that gives us our meaning. We are not just all about work and production! The medicine wheel is a model and how it shows all our dimensions, a great tool, a medicine of balance, and developing empathic capacity. Edmundo's single parent routine with two kids, a story of getting frustrated with his daughter and he was not pleased with how he handled that. So, he put the tools into practice and had a stunning result. "First you make a connection and then both of you are heard." Finding clarity in himself and then using the tools changed everything and there was clear communication, forgiveness, and love. So it's really a self connect first to get clear what is going on, then communicate. What gets in the way are internalized moralistic judgments on what is good or bad. The difference between judgment and discernment is key. "If it's right or wrong typically we'll be right... but with only one small kernel of truth... The heart of this practice is empathy, and clarity on what is going on inside of me?" That is the self connect. Looking at history, enlightened self interest, non-self interest, stories of British soldiers, and holiday songs.
"Nonviolent Communication"
As an educator Edmundo's interest has always been in pedagogy, how people learn and human development. Not just the mental part that we are but all dimensions of a human. He was drawn to the Native American traditional approach that seeks something greater than just being in our head, the medicine wheel represents the whole human being including our spiritual domain. Since college in the 60s he was exposed to work going on in humanistic psychology, the idea that human beings can learn, grow, and transform has always excited him. How can we understand ourselves on the emotional level and connect with others in a society where conflict is inevitable? Over the decades this work narrowed down, human development ended up morphing into cognitive development ignoring the other dimensions of humanity. He wondered who is doing work on human development now, where did the Human Potential Movement of the 60s go? For 20 years he has been doing diversity work, conflicts with race, class, ethnicity, something that has plagued our society. But there was something missing in its practice until one day listening to the radio a guy was talking about conflict resolution and developing the capacity for empathy. Edmundo heard the ring of truth and experience in the man, there was something deeper there, it was Dr. Marshall Rosenberg. Now he had the missing tools, powerful principles, being in the present moment, understanding feelings, emotions, positive or negative, useful information on the heart level, observing, naming it without judgment, and how this is used with conflicts that leads to connection. He was told that NVC is really a spiritual practice in the guise of a communication strategy. What is it that should be at the core of making decisions and directions in life? Edmundo describes this process in detail, many examples of approaching conflicts, are you truly heard and seen? What is violence, our internal compass, stories and much more. NVC is not about being "nice", it's about learning, experiencing, understanding emotions, and great awareness. A very interesting and productive approach to understanding self and others through "Emotional Intelligence".
